Timothy J. Juelson, MD

Dr. Juelson - The Bone & Joint Center - NDDr. Juelson - The Bone & Joint Center - ND Dr. Timothy J. Juelson is a board-certified and fellowship-trained orthopedic surgeon and sports medicine specialist who joined The Bone & Joint Center in 2011.

In 2014, he became the first orthopedic surgeon in North Dakota to earn a certificate of added qualification in orthopedic sports medicine. This is the highest level of certification available in orthopedic surgery.

Locally, Dr. Juelson has served as a team physician for the University of Mary, Bismarck Wolves, St. Mary’s High School, Dakota Wizards, and the Women’s NBA. He was also a team physician for Auburn University’s national championship football team in 2010.

Dr. Juelson focuses on treating conditions affecting the shoulder, elbow, knee, and hip. He has a special interest in ACL reconstruction, patella dislocations, multiple ligament knee injuries, meniscus transplants, articular cartilage repair, cartilage transplant, shoulder dislocations, limb realignment, and joint preservation. When surgery is necessary, Dr. Juelson often utilizes minimally invasive arthroscopic techniques.

Education is a lifelong pursuit for Dr. Juelson. He teaches complex orthopedic sports procedures to surgeons from around the world at the Orthopaedic Learning Center in Chicago and educates students at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and the University of Mary about orthopedic sports surgery.

Dr. Juelson is a fellow of the Arthroscopy Association of North America (AANA), American Orthopaedic Society for Sports Medicine (AOSSM), and the American Academy of Orthopaedic Surgeons (AAOS). Dr. Juelson is a past president of the North Dakota Orthopaedic Society.

EDUCATION & TRAINING:

A native of North Dakota, Dr. Juelson earned a bachelor’s degree in biology with a minor in chemistry at the University of Jamestown. He also competed in track & field under legendary coach Rollie Greeno.

Dr. Juelson earned his medical degree at the University of North Dakota School of Medicine and Health Sciences. During this time, he co-authored multiple papers in peer-reviewed journals and presented at a national meeting where he received recognition for one of his research projects.

Dr. Juelson completed his orthopedic surgery residency training at the University of Missouri at Kansas City, where he worked with the Kansas City Royals baseball team. In his last year of residency, his research project won a national poster competition.

Following his residency training, Dr. Juelson completed a sports medicine fellowship at the Andrews Institute for Orthopaedics & Sports Medicine in Gulf Breeze, Florida. He worked side-by-side with renowned sports surgeons Dr. James Andrews and Dr. Leon Paulos.

During his fellowship training, Dr. Juelson worked on a daily basis with high school, collegiate, and professional athletes from around the world. Additional time was spent using nonsurgical treatments to help patients to avoid surgery.

He served as a team physician to the University of West Florida national championship baseball team, Washington High School, Gulf Coast Community College, and Gulf Breeze High School football.
